Will repeated abortions make me barren? Can past abortions decrease my chances of getting pregnant in the future? Does abortions really cause infertility? We will answer these questions and more in this short video.

The best way to answer this question is to say that it depends. It depends on a lot of factors. But two of the most important factors here are: How was it done? How was the abortion done? Who did the abortion?

Let's start from the second: Who did the abortion?

If the abortion was carried out by a trained medical personnel ‎in a healthy environment then we might be confident that steps were taken to prevent infertility and other complications in the future. ‎However, if the abortion was done by someone not trained in the science of conducting an abortion medically, then the risk of infertility might increase slightly.

Secondly, how was it done? How was the abortion done? Was it medical abortion or surgical abortion? Don't worry, i'll explain.

In medical abortion, pills (drugs) are swallowed or inserted in the vagina to bring out the baby. In that case the risk of developing infertility in the future is quite low except of course if there is some form of infection after the abortion.

On the other hand in surgical abortion, an instrument is inserted inside the vagina to either suck out or scrape out the developing baby. Now, here we have some risk of damage to the womb or to the opening of the womb called the cervix. An injury might develop leading to scar formation which might in the future reduce the chance of infertility. Also there might be infection which might lead to reduced fertility in the future.

Another factor is the number of abortions the lady has had. Because for every abortion the mouth of the womb has to be opened forcefully sort of to bring out the developing baby. Now repeated opening might increase the ‎risk of miscarriages in the future.

So to answer your questions, does past abortions cause future infertility? Now it depends. It depends on: Who did it? How it was done? And how many times it was done.

But generally, the risk of developing infertility or bareness or ‎difficulty in getting pregnant in the future from past abortions is low, very low except if there was serious damage during the abortion or serious infection after the abortion.
